Galaxy Want Stars' Future Settled

Landon Donovan

It's deja vu all over again; Los Angeles Galaxy chief Tim Leiweke is making noise that he wants the future of star midfielder David Beckham decided as soon as possible so as not to distract the club during their run at the MLS Cup.

During the first go 'round on the Beckham loan train, Leiweke made similarly bold statements and set deadlines, as the back-and-forth between MLS, the Galaxy, and AC Milan drug on. A deal was eventually completed, and Beckham got his wish of European football; that wish has been recycled for 2010, as the Englishman has been told by England National Team manager Fabio Capello that he must be playing in a top league if he hopes to make his country's World Cup roster.

While Beckham gets the headline, and the story referenced here gives him top billing, Leiweke also made a statement that is perhaps more important to many American fans; Leiweke included Landon Donovan's January future in his declaration, stating that the team would like to have the US international's destination sorted within the next two weeks. Because Donovan's name has dropped off the transfer rumor mill in recent months, and because the status of his contract is still a bit confusing (my understanding is that the league holds an option on him), two weeks seems a difficult time frame in which to strike a deal; that doesn't mean it won't happen, and it's clear that Donovan wants to get back to Europe this winter, so anything is possible.

Clubs rumored to be interested in Donovan's services include Livorno (who backed off due to the finances involved) and Paris St. Germain.

The guess here is that Leiweke is making a lot of noise in an attempt to do right by his club, but that the two week deadline won't hold.

What do you make of the smoke that Leiweke is blowing?
