Donovan Wants the Win

Landon Donovan

Landon Donovan doesn't want one point in Mexico City. He wants three.

Of course, this is the type of statement you want coming from a team leader (put me in that group that thinks Donovan should wear the armband on Wednesday) only a few days before the match.

The US faces an uphill battle for many reasons, not limited to but including the Azteca factor (altitude and smog), the short training period, and the American history of failure against El Tri in Mexico.

The team assembles today in Miami for training before traveling for the game on Tuesday. Several observers have questioned the wisdom of training at sea level before heading to altitude, though there seems to be conflicting scientific information about the issue. While logic would dictate that training somewhere that can replicate Mexico City's oxygen would be smart, there's also a school of thought that unless you have a significant amount of time to adjust, arriving at the "last minute" is preferable.

I guess we'll find out on Wednesday.
