San Antonio MLS Rumors Surface

From La Jornada comes an intriguing bit of news on the long-dormant MLS expansion prospects of San Antonio; the former president of Mexican club Necaxa, Antonio de Alba*, tells the paper that he is in "advanced" discussion with MLS to acquire an expansion franchise for the Texas city.

He also indicates that he has discussed the plan with the mayor's office and the owner of the San Antonio Spurs as well.

I have no other information than the La Jornada report; I hope to corroborate the story if I can.

This is especially interesting as San Antonio has not been mentioned for either of the league's next two expansion spots (which would get them to twenty teams). Montreal is though to be the clear front runner for one of those bids, with several other markets, including St. Louis, rumored for the other.

San Antonio fits the type of market I would prefer to see MLS look towards; mid-sized with limited competition from other professional sports, and a strong soccer-loving community in the Hispanic population.

La Jornada link is the translated version of the story; for the original in Spanish, click here.

*I've also seen his name written as "Marco Antonio de Alba"
