The Puerto Rico Islanders, they of the magical CONCACAF Champions League semi-final run in 2008-2009, will have the opportunity to repeat the feet in 2009-2010.
The Islanders beat Haitian side Tempete FC last night in Trinidad & Tobago 2-0, needing extra time to see their place in the CFU Championship final secured. That final berth brings with it qualification for the Champions League, and will give the USL side another opportunity to prove themselves against some of the region's best.
Sunday's CFU final will pit the Islanders against T&T side W. Connection, and while Puerto Rico would certainly love to win their first Caribbean club championship, the important bit is already done.
The Islanders may be the only USL side to qualify for the Champions League this season; both the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Montreal Impact have the opportunity to qualify through the Canadian Championship (Voyageurs Cup), but MLS club Toronto FC leads the way in the early goings of the competition.
It will be extremely difficult for Puerto Rico to repeat their dream campaign, both in the league and in the CCL. But they've given themselves the opportunity, and that's all that can be done at this point. Now they need to right themselves in the league (after the CFU final, of course), and climb up the table to their rightful place.
The Islanders have done much to raise the profile of the USL, and I'm happy to see them with a chance to do it again.
