GOLD CUP DAVIES

Charlie Davies' rumored move to Ligue 1 side Sochaux is complete, as announced on the Hammarby website.

Davies has now gone from American college soccer to Sweden to France all in the span of three years. The Confederations Cup, and his strong performance there, obviously did him good; besides Sochaux, several other European clubs were rumored to be interested in his services. But it's France where Charlie lands, a place where by most accounts he should fit in just fine. As with all American internationals that are prominent in the USMNT setup (and Charlie clearly is now), the most important part of a transfer is playing time. If Davies plays regularly at Sochaux, and there's no reason to think he won't, then it's a good move for a young player. Ligue 1 is certainly a stronger league than Sweden's Allsvenskan, and should help Davies develop further.

I'm curious now if Davies will be released from Gold Cup duty in light of the transfer; the club will want to unveil him, and it would seem important that he get to pre-season training as soon as possible (I have no idea when Ligue 1 teams start training).

What do you think of this move? Is it the right place for Davies to land, and do you think he'll improve playing in France?
