USA-Honduras: The Aftermath

Santino Quaranta

The United States outlasted Honduras 2-0 at RFK tonight, with goals by Santino Quaranta and Brian Ching making the difference.

Honduras pressed early, and the US looked out of sorts during the early going. Though the Hondurans had chances, they weren't able to put them away, and the Americans eventually got the better of play.

Bradley's substitutes turned the game, with Benny Feilhaber and Charlie Davies each playing roles in Quaranta's breakthrough goal.

Quaranta's goal was a nice moment in his club's home stadium, especially in light of his personal travails. It appears that he may have completed his resurrection, though I expect he'll be continually trying to improve as he has his eye on a World Cup roster spot next year.

Aside from Quaranta, the story of the night was the changes Bob Bradley made to inject some life into his squad after a poor start and weak middle third of the match.

Give Bradley credit for making the changes when he needed to, and for removing two players that were no longer effective (Adu and Pause). Freddy Adu has done himself no favors through two Gold Cup matches, and it will be worth watching to see if he continues to start.

The inserted players, Feilhaber and Davies, each added something the US was sorely lacking, and the team's overall play picked up immediately. On a field with "B" (or "C" if you like) players on each side, Feilhaber was clearly a class above.

There also seemed to be a killer instinct in the team tonight, and they did not rest on their laurels after either goal. They pushed for more, an attitude the the USMNT, "A", "B", or whatever, need to continue to foster.

Excuse the short burst presentation; I should have a few more better-explained thoughts tomorrow, with an eye towards how Bradley has directed his team through these two Gold Cup matches.

Till then.
