Fredy Montero is off the hook. No charges will be filed against the Sounders striker after the Seattle district attorney's office determined that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the case.
This is great news; not just for Sounders fans, but for MLS. The league needs Seattle to go on as the feel-good story its been to this point, in light of the recent downer of DC United's stadium problems.
I realize that I may be the only commentator on the planet connecting the two stories, but it makes sense to view Major League Soccer's PR position as a series of wins and losses. Until the Montero allegations broke, Seattle was certainly in the "win" column. United's stadium problems is clearly a "loss", both because of their relative importance to the community (coverage is still lacking, though) and because of United's history in the league.
With Fredy's saga coming to a "happy" ending, the league can breathe a deep sigh of relief and continue to pump up Seattle as a major success story. Not that Montero could drag down the Sounders' success single-handedly, but it would have certainly been a black mark if the kid had been charged, leading to a drawn out legal process.
I'm tempted to comment on the larger, non-soccer issue of sexual assault allegations and the proliferation thereof (especially as it relates to athletes), but I know I'm not informed enough on Montero's particular case to draw any proper conclusions.
I'm happy that Montero has been let off the hook, because I think it's good for the Sounders and the league, though I also hope that the DA's office in Seattle got it right. More than likely, we'll never know the truth, Fredy will go on playing and scoring for the Sounders, and we'll all forget this every happened by the time the All-Star Game comes around.
