Number Six: United Looks to Bounce Back

Obvious statement alert: 2008 was a disappointing year for D.C. United. The most decorated club in MLS history failed to make the playoffs after a much-hyped signing (Marcelo Gallardo), a raise for their top scorer (Luciano Emilio) and the typical big expectations. United hope to rebound with a strong 2009 campaign, climbing back to their usual place at the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Early returns in pre-season have been disheartening, will injuries racking up across the squad. While the product on the pitch will always be the first concern, and United's fans will continue to support their beloved club, focus could be off the pitch and on the team's efforts to land a stadium deal in Prince George's County. With the club's owner making veiled references to relocation if a deal can't be struck, fans will want to lose themselves in another MLS Cup run by the Black & Red.

Lost in the shuffle of United news is the return of Christian Gomez from Colorado, an acquisition that should immediately improve the offense. However, if United start poorly, Tom Soehn could be the first coaching casuality of the 2009 MLS season.
