The countdown continues, and "Nordecke" just sounds tough, doesn't it?
Number Three: Can Columbus Repeat?
Columbus completed a dream double last year, winning the MLS Cup after finishing the regular season with a Supporters' Shield to their name. Guillermo Barros Schelotto did everything but stand on his head for the men from Ohio, and was justly rewarded with an MVP trophy. Head Coach Sigi Schmid led his team to a championship, then promptly departed for expansion side Seattle Sounders FC. Long time MLSer Robert Warzycha take over the reigns from the departed Schmid, and hopes to lead Columbus back to the top of the mountain. All the parts remain in place for another successful season for the Crew, and the usual excellence will be expected out of those players who carried them last year. If Warzycha is effective with his message, and there isn't too much of a fall off for some of the Crew's older players (GBS and Frankie Hejduk chief among them), then we can expect another deep Cup run from Columbus, something their rabid Nordecke fans will surely savor.
Apparently the Crew organization has gone and trademarked the name "Nordecke", denying their fans the opportunity to disseminate paraphernalia emblazoned with that name (which was a fan creation in the first place). Doesn't really seem the best approach to fostering a good relationship with their supporters, now does it?
