Four days later, and the US National Team is right back at it. After Wednesday's depressing showing against Costa Rica in San Jose, tonight's qualifier against Honduras takes on greater meaning.
The US needs a strong showing just to shake the funk of Costa Rica; while that match represents some of the worst play they are capable of and is unlikely to become a trend, beating Honduras emphatically will help them move on more confidently.
Bob Bradley will want to set his team out on the right foot simply on principal; while another poor showing wouldn't necessarily mean anything for this employment prospect, it would certainly make it more difficult to focus both his and his team's attention on a busy summer schedule.
Bradley's lone change to the squad since Wednesday's loss is the call up of Conor Casey in place of the injured Brian Ching. Casey's name has been on the tongues of many observers recently, as his league play makes him the American forward on the best form. It even appears that Casey may get the start tonight in Chicago.
The quick turnaround for the National Team is not an optimal situation. It seems likely that travel and lack of training time together had an effect on the play down in Central America; although on home soil tonight, only two days of rest won't be conducive to a fresh squad.
I think we'll see a significantly different starting eleven tonight than we did in Costa Rica. Beasley may either move back into the midfield, or be dropped to the bench. He does not appear cut out for left back. Jozy Altidore did not appear to be in game shape on Wednesday, and may not start up top. Marvel Wynne played so poorly last time out that it's hard to conceive of him getting another start.
Home soil, no matter the crowd, is magical stuff for the Americans. Playing in the comfort of Soldier Field, Bradley's boys are sure to be a completely different team tonight.
Picking the US to beat Costa Rica in Costa Rica was a hopeful choice, rather than a purely logical one. History was against them, and a victory was always going to be the least likely outcome. But tonight is different, and predicting an American victory is neither illogical or hopeful. I expect Bradley to have his team ready to play, I expect a spirited effort from Honduras, and I expect that the US will come out on top in the end.
USA 2 Honduras 0
